Some places get written about. Grubstake gets rhymed about.
When underground hip hop trio Hail Mary Mallon released a track called “Grubstake,” they didn't need to explain the title. Anyone who had stumbled out of a Polk Street bar after last call or walked over from a show at the Regency Ballroom already knew exactly what it meant.
The song captures San Francisco late night life in all its chaos and character. Fights breaking up outside, late buses, crowds spilling out of bars and afterhours spots, with the Grubstake sitting right in the middle of it all like it always has.
The video was filmed at the diner and out front on the street, capturing the real atmosphere of the neighborhood. No filters. No Hollywood version of San Francisco. Just the Grubstake that regulars know.
It wasn't the first time the diner found its way into music. Years earlier, San Francisco punk icon Bambi Lake gave Grubstake a nod in “Golden Age of Hustlers.” Then in 2025, San Francisco's own Larry June filmed scenes for “The Smooth Kind” at the diner.
Different artists. Different eras. Same red dining car.
Anyone who has ever walked out of a nearby concert, bar, or studio session knows there's nothing quite like a cheesesteak at four in the morning. Grubstake isn't just a backdrop. It's a piece of San Francisco nightlife culture.
