Larry June Films The Smooth Kind at Grubstake Diner

Artist: Larry June

Video: The Smooth Kind

Director: David Camarena

Producer: Suj Randhawa

Location: Grubstake Diner

When Larry June filmed scenes for The Smooth Kind at the Grubstake, it added another chapter to a spot that's been part of San Francisco late night culture for decades. The video moves through the booths, counter, and glow of the diner in a way that feels familiar to anyone who's spent late nights in the city.

Larry June represents a real San Francisco mindset. Smooth, independent, health conscious, business minded, and all about staying in your own lane and building something authentic. Numbers, ownership, good energy. That vibe fits naturally with the Grubstake, a place with character, consistency, and deep roots in the local community.

The video also highlights the hand painted "Coast to Coast" murals created in 1976 by John Jason Phillips. The murals follow a cross country journey to San Francisco during the Gold Rush, with each panel telling a different part of the story. Years later, Phillips returned to restore them himself. They remain one of the most recognizable parts of the diner and are featured throughout the video.

Director David Camarena, producer Suj Randhawa, along with Julian Edward Tongol, Ace, and the rest of the crew brought a creative vision to the project while keeping the natural feel of the space intact. Some scenes even show Larry in multiple places inside the diner at once, created by blending different takes together in post production. The result feels cinematic without losing the authenticity of the Grubstake.

Since filming, the longtime "Table 10" booth has officially been renamed the Larry June Booth, complete with a commemorative plaque marking another Bay Area music moment tied to the diner.

From The Smooth Kind to Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, Grubstake remains a gathering place where locals, artists, night owls, and visitors cross paths over good food and late night conversations.

Good job! Grubstake.
